Yes, malaysia has surf. The bad news is that you get everything damp. The good news is that it is seldom crowded. The bad news is that you get the mosquitos.

The best time to go is the wet season as this creates the waves.

Cherating: Cherating lies on the east coast of malaysia. It is a long, peeling left hand point break. The rip is outrageous and takes you away from the take off zone (tide dependent, though). Jump from the rocks just before the next set otherwise you will tire yourself out, get a ride then get back to the beach and walk round to the point again. When it is good you can get a really long ride though. Boards are available for rent at about RM10-15 per hour.

There are also breaks at the Quarry (20-30 minutes in a car north) and at Kota Baru. Ask in Cherating for details. Crowds are unheard of.

Get the bus there and walk down a side road to the coast. It is really hard to find the location of the town from the road so ask the bus driver to drop you off when you get there.

Accomodation is cheap in the wet season. Might be worth getting an air con room just for mosquito and humidity survival reasons.
